Fort Myers was doused in water after hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida which resulted in catastrophic flooding and winds.
In horrifying photos from The Sunshine State’s southwest coast, entire homes could be seen submerged in water, whereas a monstrous 18-foot storm surge was reported in Fort Myers.
According to the reports, the hurricane reached wind speeds of up to 155 mph making it a category five hurricane.
Furthermore, experts reported that the storm could maintain hurricane-level strength for the next 24 hours.
As of this writing, at least 1.3 million citizens remain without power, whereas thousands remain stranded or trapped in flooding homes.
“Mother nature is a very fearsome adversary, please heed those evacuation warnings. You could see power outages, inland flooding, various types of tree damage from the wind so be prepared for that,” Florida Governor DeSantis said on Tuesday as he warned of a “historic” storm and “catastrophic” flooding.
Fort Myers is one of the first cities to be battered by the hurricane after it made landfall. Suffering extreme consequences of the storm were also Sanibel Island and Naples where countless buildings and vehicles were submerged in water.
According to local reports, hundreds of people in Naples alone were left stranded on their rooftops after failing to adhere to the evacuation orders.
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin have since both declared a state of emergency in preparations for Hurricane Ian as the storm moves northward.
Meanwhile, Governor DeSantis urged residents who chose to wait out the storm in their homes to stay inside their properties or bunkers until it is over.
