Former Tonight Show presenter Jay Leno has confirmed that he sustained serious burns to his face after one of his cars burst into flames in his garage.
Sources told TMZ that the left side of the 72-year-old’s face suffered severe burns and he was rushed to the hospital.
“I got some serious burns from a gasoline fire,” Leno said in a statement.
“I am ok. Just need a week or two to get back on my feet,” he added.
The Jay Leno’s Garage host was rushed to Grossman Burn Center after the incident. According to TMZ, his ear and eye were not affected by the fire.
George Swift, one of the employees working at the garage, said to Entertainment Tonight that it was a steam car that burst into flames.
“It was a steam car. This steam was made by gas. It got sprayed, as a gas,” Swift said. “He called me, and he told me there was a fire and the fire department is coming.”
He also said that the host’s injuries are serious but not fatal.
“He’s a tough guy, he’s going to be fine. It’s nothing life-threatening,” he went on.
“He’s in great spirits, but you know, it’s going to take a while.”
The Burbank Fire Department also told ET that they were called to the LA garage around 12:30 pm on Saturday. When they arrived at the scene, “one adult male” was treated immediately.
Leno was rushed to a local emergency room before he was taken to the Grossman Burn Center where he received further treatment.
His Las Vegas performance was canceled as he suffered a ‘serious medical emergency,’ event organizers said.
An email addressed to Forum 2022 attendees and obtained by People read: “His family was not able to provide us very many details, but there was a very serious medical emergency that is preventing Jay from traveling.
“All we know is that he is alive, so our prayers go out to him and his family tonight.”
