Jimmy Carter paid his final goodbye to his late wife Rosalynn Carter at her private funeral service.
The emotional ceremony took place at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, where the former First Lady’s loved ones gathered to pay their final respects.
The former president, 99, attended the service in a wheelchair after it was revealed he left hospice care because he didn’t want to miss the funeral of his wife of 77 years.
It is said that the service was not short of tears, whereas attendees close to the former activist and writer wore Hawaiian-themed necklaces made of flowers to honor Rosalynn’s love for the state.
During the private event, Maranatha Pastor Tony Lowden remembered Carter’s “life and legacy of the greatest first lady.”
He went on to praise the former First Lady saying she “served every nation around the world” rather than just the White House and her country.
It was reported that Rosalynn was buried at the Plains home she shared with her husband. Her spot is located in view of the porch on which she loved spending time with the love of her life. It was also confirmed that Jimmy Carter would join his wife in the burial spot when his life ran out.
The funeral service comes shortly after the Atlanta memorial service in which Rosalynn was remembered for her life achievements and her devotion to her husband.
“My mom spent most of her life in love with my dad. Their partnership and love story was a defining feature of her life. Because he isn’t able to speak to you today. I’m going to share some of his words about loving and missing,” daughter Amy Carter said at the service before reading the letter her father had wrote for Rosalynn nearly eight decades ago.
“My darling every time I have ever been away from you, I have been thrilled when I returned to discover just how wonderful you are. While I’m away I tried to convince myself you could not be as sweet and beautiful as I remember,” the letter read.
“But when I see you, I fall in love with you all over again. Does that seem strange to you? It doesn’t to me. Goodbye darling. Until tomorrow Jimmy.”
Our thoughts remain with Rosalynn’s loved ones during this challenging time.
