Johnny Depp has reportedly teamed up with producers Al Pacino and Barry Navidi to direct his first movie in 25 years.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star has made an epic return to Hollywood following his dramatic win in the defamation trial against his ex-wife, Amber Heard.
As The Hollywood Reporter announced, the 59-year-old actor, singer, and producer will be directing the film Modigliani along with co-producers Al Pacino and Barry Navidi.
The biopic will revolve around Amedeo Clemente Modigliani, an Italian sculptor and painter who worked in France in the early 20th century and became well-known, albeit posthumously, for his artworks including modern-style portraits and nudes.
The directorial comeback marks the first time Depp will direct a movie since his 1997 movie The Brave.
It has since the big reveal also come to light that the cast will be unraveled soon and that the production will begin as early as the spring of 2023.
“The saga of Mr. Modigliani’s life is one that I’m incredibly honored, and truly humbled, to bring to the screen,” Depp told THR.
“It was a life of great hardship, but eventual triumph — a universally human story all viewers can identify with.”
As the actor confirmed, he and the co-producers will direct the movie through Infinitum Nihil, a production company founded by Depp and run by his sister, Christi Dembrowski.
“This project has been very close to Al’s heart. Al introduced me to the play Modigliani many years ago and I instantly fell in love with it,” said Navidi of the project.
“This is a slice of Modi’s life and not a bio. It’s been a dream of mine to work with Johnny again — he’s a true artist with an amazing vision to bring this great story to the screen.”
