Empire actor Jussie Smollett has been found guilty of staging a racist attack.
According to local media reports, Smollett was reportedly found guilty by a 12 member jury for lying to the police on six counts when he chose to fabricate a story to officers regarding how he had become the victim of a recent targeted attack in January of 2019.
The actor stated he was abused by two ‘white’ thugs who yelled racist as well as homophobic slurs at him.
Smollett could now face a jail sentence comprising of at least 20 years behind bars, and that entails a total of 4 year years for each of the six counts that he has been charged with. At the same time, some sources reveal that he could be expected to get off with just probation. But there are no confirmed reports regarding this as of yet.
The star initially complained to authorities about how two white men wearing masks attacked him while he was visiting downtown Chicago, where he happened to be engaged in the filming of his show Empire.
Cops explained to the courtroom how they soon investigated his claims and found out that the whole story was fake, adding how the actor fabricated the entire scene. In addition, they spoke about how he even hired two actors of Nigerian descent to assist him in the act.
In the same way, cops revealed how the actor chose to indulge in unlawful behavior because he was unhappy with where he was in his career and wished to seek some improvement in his salary. For this reason, the star felt that an act like this could shoot him to fame as he entered the spotlight.
Meanwhile, Smollett has denied all the charges and how he orchestrated the attack as he took the court’s stand this week.
He also spoke about how he thought the attacker was white since the assailant referred to him by the n-word.
