Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has split from his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, the politician himself confirmed in a statement.
The 51-year-old PM and his wife shared matching posts in which they announced their decision to part ways on their respective social media accounts today.
The statement read: “Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate.
“As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and we will continue to build. For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy.”
According to the reports, Sophie has since already moved out of their family home and found another place in Ottawa to stay at.
Sources also confirmed that the couple’s three children with continue to live with the prime minister in the New Edinburgh neighborhood and that the pair will share custody.
“They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward,” an insider revealed.
“They remain a close family and Sophie and the Prime Minister are focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving and collaborative environment. The family will be together on vacation, beginning next week.”
It is also said that Sophie will stay at her ex-husband’s house to look after her children when he’s traveling for work.
Justina and Sophie’s split comes after 18 years of marriage and just months after the politician posted a sweet tribute to his wife on her birthday.
“Happy birthday, Sophie. From this, to this, and everything in between, there’s no one I’d rather have by my side… I love you, mon amour,” he wrote back in April.
