Kate Middleton paid the Queen a touching tribute as the entire family gathered to receive the late monarch’s coffin at Buckingham Palace.
On Tuesday night, Queen Elizabeth II’s three children – King Charles, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward – were flanked by Prince William, Kate, Prince Harry, and Meghan as they awaited the arrival of the Queen and Princess Anne who accompanied her mother’s coffin on the journey to London after the longest-reigning British monarch passed away at Balmoral.
For the saddening occasion, Kate, who became the Princess of Wales after the Queen’s death, donned a smart black ensemble and a pearl necklace along with pearl earrings in a clear nod to the late monarch.
Her Majesty was a great fan of simple jewelry options and seemed to adore pearls. She frequently sported a pearl necklace and was seen wearing one after the death of her husband, Prince Philip.
As Arseiny Budrevich, a jewelry expert and the founder of Budrevich Fine Jewellery Studio, said in an interview with Express.co.uk, the Queen loved pearls because they symbolize “purity and chastity” while representing the virtues of liberty and generosity.
“Pearls have been associated with class, elegance and sophistication since the Ptolemaic dynasty in ancient Egypt, where the Royal Family wore pearls to show their status,” Budrevich said.
“This tradition was then passed down through the holy Roman empire to the French monarchs who carried it into fashion in the middle ages, where it was subsequently dispersed through Europe. This is when the British empire picked up the style.”
The Queen, who passed away last Thursday, will be lying in state at the Palace of Westminster from Wednesday until her funeral at Westminster Abbey and her burial at St George’s Chapel on September 19.
