The virus that killed Gene Hackman’s wife has ended up killing three other people in the California city of Mammoth Lakes in Mono County.
They were reportedly found dead in their home in New Mexico on February 26, with Betsy’s cause of death determined as hantavirus pulmonary syndrome.
HPS is usually caused by the likes of a Hantavirus, and sources have confirmed that three fatal cases were reported in a single town in California.
On Thursday, the Mono County Health and Human Services Public Health Division shared how a third death due to the HPS was reported in the town of Mammoth Lakes.
This is nearly 330 miles driving distance east of San Francisco. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explained on its website how people get this hantavirus from contact with rodents such as rats and mice.
This is especially true when they’re exposed to urine, saliva, and droppings. While it’s a rare occurrence, this virus can spread through the rat’s bite or even a scratch. Boo explained how none of the three killed engaged in any kind of activity linked to exposure, predicting how they might have been contacted it during normal daily routines, either in the workplace or at their homes.
