Kim Kardashian has called on the Colorado governor to consider clemency as she voiced her support for convicted trucker Rogel Aguilera-Mederos.
26-year-old Rogel Aguilera-Mederos was sentenced to 110 years in prison after being found guilty of 27 charges, including four counts of vehicular homicide, after causing a deadly accident back in 2019.
Following the jury’s conviction, the young driver was sentenced to what the judge explained was the minimum mandatory sentence of 110 years in prison.
Since the sentencing, angry truckers have begun boycotting the State of Colorado over its “unfair” laws. As many as 4.5 million people have since also signed a petition for clemency.
Calling on Colorado Governor Jared Polis to grant a pardon to Aguilera-Mederos was also Kim Kardashian who made it clear she stands with the trucker as she urged the governor to “do the right thing” because “Colorado law really has to be changed.”
“Shocking and unfair part of this case is that the judge didn’t want to sentence him to such a lengthy sentence. However, because of the mandatory minimums in Colorado, his hands were tied,” Kim Kardashian wrote in a series of Instagram posts.
“Mandatory minimums take away judicial discretion and need to end,” the 41-year-old, who recently passed California’s baby bar law exam, added as she tagged the governor in her post.
“Colorado law really has to be changed and this is so unfair. @govofco is a really food person and I know he will do the right thing.”
She later concluded: “I pray that Governor Polis, who has been a leader on supporting reforms that increase human dignity in the legal system, will commute his sentence.”
