At least five people were injured in a terrifying stabbing incident near Amsterdam’s central Dam Square, as shared by the police.
The knifeman struck on Sint Nicolaasstraat near the city’s iconic Dam Square, at about 2:30 pm GMT.
One of the witnesses explained to the media outlet De Telegraaf how they heard a loud icy scream before panic broke out in the area.
One shop worker shared how there was absolute chaos with screaming and crying and shouting all around, while others started to run in all directions for cover.
A girl was attacked while an elderly individual was stabbed in the back, as per local media reports. Live footage of the historic landmark showed a massive crowd gathering around the cordoned-off region in front of the royal palace.
Meanwhile, a trauma helicopter, ambulances, and up to 14 police cars and vans were seen rushing to be in attendance.
The motive is still not clear, but it’s all still under investigation. One spokesperson for the police explained to local media outlets that they received reports about a robbery taking place. They soon realized that it was a stabbing at a mass gathering with several people seriously injured.
The area where the suspect was reportedly seen was then cordoned off, and more information is said to be released in due time. Another witness shared how scary and frightening the whole incident turned out to be. Those injured were rushed to a nearby local hospital, but no word on the stabber was shared till now.
