In the movie, young musician Miguel challenges his family’s ban on music and makes his way to the Land of the Dead to meet a legendary singer – his great-great-grandfather.

While Disney, the parent company of Pixar, never officially recognized Maria’s role in the creation of the character Mama Coco, the woman’s family spoke out and claimed they were visited by Pixar who took several photos of the grandmother.

The family also insisted that the Pixar team lived with them for some time, presumably to learn more about their lifestyle and habits.
