A 55-year-old Ukrainian sailor has been arrested for trying to sink a Russian’s $6 million yacht after the war broke out.
Taras Ostapchuk, a mechanical engineer, now plans to return to Ukraine to fight Russian soldiers and defend his home.
According to reports, the 156ft yacht was tied at Port Adriano by Alexander Mijeev, a former head of the Russian Helicopter Corporation and now taking over state-owned weapons supplier Rostec.
Mr. Ostapchuk said he opened the valves on the yacht, claiming his boss sells weapons to Russian President Vladimir Putin that are being used to kill Ukrainians.
“I don’t regret anything I’ve done and I would do it again,” he told police. “My boss is a criminal who sells weapons that kill the Ukrainian people.”
The sailor vowed to join the Ukrainian army and said: “I’ve lost the fist battle, which was to sink my Russian boss’s ship but I will win the next one.”
The 55-year-old confirmed he was left outraged after seeing a helicopter carrying weapons he believes were made by his boss’s company.
“I’m going to fight. As soon as I reach the first Ukrainian city I will look for a military commander and ask him if they need me,” he told island paper Ultima Hora.
“I told myself: ‘Why do I need a job if I have my country. I had a good job as a head mechanic on the boat and a good salary but I am going to fight for my nation.”
He added: “I am not going to lose my country. I am not a hero, I’m a middle-aged man, but I have a lot of experience as a mechanic. I’ve never held a weapon but if necessary I will. Why not.”
