A disabled man who struggled to reach his apartment every day has built himself a solar-powered elevator.
69-year-old Alexander Yudin from Russia was left bound to a wheelchair after losing one of his legs decades ago and breaking the other in a recent accident.
After suffering from mobility issues and finding it hard to get to his third-floor apartment which is located in a building with no disabled access, the man decided to build himself a solar-powered elevator.
In pictures taken outside of Alexander’s home, the senior man is seen fastening a harness to himself and his wheelchair before being lifted off the ground and pulled up by his homemade device.
After reaching his floor, the man proceeds by opening his makeshift gate and sliding onto his balcony from where he get inside the apartment.
“I was lying with a cast and thinking how to avoid immobilizing myself, how to get myself out of this situation,” Mr. Yudin told REUTERS.
“Even when I get up, one more person is needed for me to get out of the house. Since everyone is at work, it was not an option.”
He added: “I thought about it a lot and opted for some sort of elevator. I did not want to be just lying around at home and waiting for something to happen, for someone to bring me food, or being immobile, just sit at the balcony and look out.”
Thanks to his ingenious creation, the resourceful man has regained his independence, whereas he can now once again get out of his home and socialize with people whenever he wants to.
