A charity backed by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has come under investigation over massive pays to two senior staff members.
One Young World is a “global forum” that brings together more than 250 organizations from over 190 countries in a bid to empower and develop young leaders to build a sustainable future.
Meghan, who has long been known for her charitable work, became the company’s counselor in 2014, whereas she was pictured at the charity’s annual summit as recently as September 2022.
During the event, the Duchess of Sussex voiced her support for the organization saying she was “thrilled” to be joined by her husband, Prince Harry, while expressing her “respect for this organization.”
The Mail on Sunday, however, has since revealed that One Young World is facing a probe by the Charity Commission after it came to light that two top officials at the charity – a mother and a daughter – allegedly received over $2 million in salaries and benefits in just under five years.
According to the reports, CEO Kate Robertson secured a pay package of nearly $500,000 for the work she did in the 18 months leading to June 2021 while her managing director daughter, Ella McKay, allegedly took home a benefits package on top of a $200,000 salary for the same period.
The Charity Commission has since launched a probe while insisting that the action taken on their side doesn’t indicate that any wrongdoing was done by the charity.
“All charities should be able to look donors and volunteers in the eye and say how their decisions about pay impact on the cause they pursue or the people they help,” a spokesperson said while confirming that a “regulatory compliance case to examine concerns about remuneration at One Young World” has been launched.point 577 | 1
Meanwhile, the charity confirmed that they remain “confident that there has been absolutely no wrongdoing.”
It should also be noted that there is no indication that Meghan or Harry knew about the alleged payments made to senior staff of the charity.
