A meteorologist has been praised for his parenting after interrupting a live broadcast to warn his children about an incoming tornado.
Doug Kammerer was presenting a weather forecast for NBC Washington when he realized that a tornado was going straight towards his home in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
Knowing that his family is likely unaware of what’s going on, the father picked up his phone during a live broadcast and called his son to give him a warning.
“As a matter of fact, I’m tracking this so closely now, this is going to go right over my house,” Kammerer said out loud as he zoomed in on the map to view the precise trajectory of the twister.
Seconds later, the meteorologist picked up his phone and called his son.
“Kent, you there, buddy? Hey man, I want you to get down in the basement. We got a tornado warning. I want to make sure you and Cally get downstairs as soon as you can,” he told his son.
“Right now?” his son replied.
Kammerer added: “Get in the bedroom down there and just wait 10 to 15 minutes. Do it now. Thanks, buddy.”
After ending the call, Kammerer returned to his job and told the viewers he had to “warn my kids, because I know what my kids are doing right now, they’re probably online gaming, and they’re not seeing this.”
Following the on-screen incident, the father spoke out on Facebook to explain the reasoning behind his actions.
“I had to make the call on live TV. I have never done anything like that before. Kids were home alone and I knew they were not watching me on TV!” he wrote.
“[When I zoomed in I] saw that it was going very close to my house and I knew I had to warn my kids.”
The meteorologist, who has since been praised for taking immediate action to protect his kids, also revealed that his children are safe.
