Michelle Yeoh has made history as she was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actress category.
The 60-year-old actress, who appeared in hits such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha, Star Trek: Discovery, Tomorrow Never Dies, and many more, on Tuesday received her first-ever Oscar nomination at Academy Awards.
Yeoh also made history as she was nominated in the Best Actress category for her role as Evelyn in the 2022 adventure/sci-fi movie Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Not only was this the actress’s first-ever Oscar nomination, but it was also the first time an Asian was nominated in the Best Actress category.
“You see, it’s possible. If she can do it, I can freaking well do it as well. That is the most important thing,” Yeoh told Deadline after the nomination.
“I’m very ordinary. I just work very hard. There are so many brilliant actresses, actors out there who know that they have a seat at the table.”
The Yes, Madam! star also called out to fellow actors and actresses as she encouraged them to “find an opportunity and get there.”
The news comes just weeks after Yeoh packed her first Golden Globe and after she said her Oscar win would be an achievement for the entire Asian community.
“I do look at all my peers—Cate Blanchett, Olivia Colman, Helen Mirren—and go, Oh God, I envy all the different opportunities you get to showcase your talent again and again,” she said.
“When you get an opportunity like this, you have to pour your heart and soul into it, because you don’t know when the next chance is. I think that is my biggest fear: Please don’t let this be the one and only.”
Speaking of the prospect of becoming the first Asian to bag an Oscar in the Best Actress category, she added: “It’s not about needing it. It’s that feeling that you don’t have to explain: it’s love from other people. My arms are out open.”
