Mila Kunis has finally spoken out about ‘that Oscar slap’ and revealed why she and her husband didn’t participate in the standing ovation for Will Smith.
During the 94th Academy Awards ceremony, Hollywood legend Will Smith notoriously stormed the stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock in the face after the comedian made a G. I. joke in a reference to Jada Pinkett’s alopecia.
After the on-air assault, the actor returned to his seat and remained inside the Dolby Theatre while the audience was left speechless.
Just minutes later, Smith received an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role over his performance in King Richard. While accepting the award, the 54-year-old also received a standing ovation, whereas the majority of the present celebrities stood up in a show of support for the actor.
Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, however, refused to go with the flow and appeared to be in disbelief after so many people stood up for the disgraced actor.
The 44-year-old actress now told C Magazine that the slap over a joke was “shocking” and “insane” as she took a jab at people who awarded the actor with a standing ovation just minutes after the incident.
“The idea of leading by example only makes sense when you actually have someone to lead. We have our tiny little tribe here at home, and never once do I want to tell them to do something if I’m not willing to do it myself,” Mila said.
“Not standing up to me was a no-brainer, but what was shocking to me was how many people did stand up.”
She added: “I thought, wow, what a time we’re living in that rather than do what’s right, people focus on doing what looks good. It’s insane to me.”
