The boyfriend of a healthy mom who mysteriously died on an American Airlines flight thought that she was ‘joking’.
Stefanie Smith and her boyfriend were traveling back to North Carolina from the Dominican Republic on February 28 when the mother-of-two suddenly fell ill.
The couple just spent five days on holiday and were sitting together when her ‘eyes rolled back inside her head.’
Smith’s friend, Maria Yanno, has spoken out and recalled the heartbreaking incident.
Speaking to ABC News, she said: “Her boyfriend said she was sitting in the seat beside him and he looked over at her, her head was kind of tilted back in her seat, her eyes were kind of rolled in the back and he said he just thought she was making fun of him, like they normally do, just joking around.
“Then she started convulsing.”
A nurse and doctor on board the plane administered CPR to the mother.
The plane was then diverted to the Turks and Caicos islands and Smith was rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead.
The 41-year-old’s devastated family did not know of any health issues she might’ve had. They want to send their own doctor to the Caribbean to see what happened before Smith’s body is returned to the US.
Her brother Chris Volz said: “Everything I’ve seen in videos, they had a great time, adding that there are ‘still a lot of unknowns.’
