The chilling words of OceanGate CEO have resurfaced after the Titan boss got trapped 12,000 feet underwater along with his fellow crew members.
Stockton Rush, 61, is the CEO and founder of OceanGate Expeditions who has been confirmed as one of the five people who remain trapped on the missing submersible with just several hours of oxygen left to spare.
As rescuers rush in hopes of locating Titan and rescuing the crew, an old interview with Rush has begun making rounds on the internet.
In an interview with CBS News last year, the businessman admitted his worst fear was getting trapped underwater and “not being able to resurface.”
“What I worry about most are things that will stop me from being able to get to the surface. Overhangs, fish nets, entanglement hazards,” Rush told David Pogue.
Nevertheless, he insisted such things were easily avoidable through piloting techniques.
“It’s pretty clear — if it’s an overhang, don’t go under it. If there is a net, don’t go near it. So, you can avoid those if you are just slow and steady,” he added.
Rush further implied he didn’t believe diving to the depths of the Titanic wreckage was particularly dangerous as he insisted there are risks to everything we do in our lives.
“I mean, if you just want to be safe, don’t get out of bed,” he said.
“Don’t get in your car. Don’t do anything. At some point, you’re going to take some risk, and it really is a risk-reward question. I think I can do this just as safely by breaking the rules.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Rush bragged about the sub being operated by an outdated $29.99 Logitech gaming controller despite the company charging passengers $250,000 per head for the trip to Titanic.
“Piloting the craft is run with a video game controller,” he said, prompting Pogue to cover his face with his hands in disbelief.
