A man who pulled out of the doomed underwater expedition to see the Titanic wreckage has spoken out and suggested the company cut too many corners for comfort.
On Sunday, OceanGate’s sub went silent and missing after reaching the Titanic wreckage some 10,000 feet underneath the surface of the Atlantic.
Five members of the doomed underwater expedition have since been confirmed as OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, British billionaire Hamish Harding, French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, and Dawood’s 19-year-old son Sulaiman.
A friend of Harding has now spoken out and revealed that he, too, was set to join the expedition to see the Titanic wreckage before pulling out and demanding a refund at the last moment.
Chris Brown, 61, claims he backed out of the agreement after taking notice of the alleged subpar quality of technology and materials used in the submarine that is supposed to withstand thousands of tons of pressure at a depth of 10,000 feet.
Speaking to The Sun, Brown said he believed the journey to the bottom of the ocean using OceanGate’s sub was simply “too risky.”
“I found out they used old scaffolding poles for the sub’s ballast — and its controls were based on computer game-style controllers,” he told the publication.
“If you’re trying to build your own submarine you could probably use old scaffold poles. But this was a commercial craft.
“Eventually I emailed them and said, ‘I’m no longer able to go on this thing.’ I asked for a refund after being less than convinced.”
Brown’s revelation comes shortly after an expert diver revealed there was little hope left for the crew of the doomed Titanic expedition.
“Worst situation is something happened to the hull and our fear is that it imploded at around 3,200 meters (10,000 feet),” G. Michael Harris said.
“When you’re talking 6,000 pounds per square inch, it is a dangerous environment. More people have been to outer-space than to this depth of the ocean. When you’re diving in these situations you have to cross your T and dot your Is. You have to do everything absolutely perfect and by the book.
“Throw in a bunch of tourists in a new sub, which was just created in the last couple of years. It’s not looking good.”
