Oprah Winfrey has sparked a debate with her controversial reaction to a young man who asked her for advice.
The 68-year-old billionaire talk show host appeared to be taken aback by a man who said he couldn’t afford to buy a $100 Christmas gift for his mother.
Approaching the TV star, the man told Oprah that his mother is not doing well as he asked what he should get her for Christmas.
“A wonderful thing is that jewelry box that I had on Favorite Things. A beautiful red jewelry box with a little…” Oprah began before the guy told her this option was “too expensive” for him.
Responding, Oprah assured the man that the present would only cost him “like $100.”
Surprising the TV host, he replied he needed something cheaper with a higher sentimental value.
That’s when Oprah came up with the idea of creating a gift card with ten reasons why he loves his mother.
“Lower than $100? You do a list of your top ten reasons why you love her, and you make a beautiful card, and it’s your top ten,” she said.
The video showing the exchange has since been circulating TikTok where thousands of viewers condemned Oprah’s tone-deaf reaction to the fan saying he couldn’t afford a $100 gift.
“She was SHOOK that $100 was too expensive. ‘Do they even make things that cost less than $100?’” one viewer wrote.
“Another billionaire acting like $100 is nothing and like everyone is supposed to think this way because she’s full of money,” another raged.
A third disappointed fan said: “A billionaire doesn’t understand how it is for the rest of us.”
Some people, however, ran to Oprah’s defense saying she came up with a good alternative that wouldn’t cost the man much money.
“Bless her heart. She was trying to help. I love both her suggestions,” someone said.
