A scientist who visited the Titanic more than 20 years ago has recalled the moment he was caught in a strong underwater current and thought he was about to meet his end.
Dr. Michael Guillen toured the wreckage two and a half miles below the Atlantic’s surface.
While they did not encounter any problems with the bow, the submersible experienced a high speed underwater current towards the stern.
Dr. Guillen recalled how they were slammed into the giant propellers, where they got stuck.
“Our sub was like a giant mosquito compared to the propeller. Huge pieces of the Titanic started falling down on us and I knew we were in trouble,” he expressed.
“The pressure down there of the water even if through a little crack – it will cut you like a razor blade.”
Dr. Guillen then hit a brick wall and thought it was the end.
“There was a voice in my head. I’ll never forget the words – ‘this is how it is going to end for you’. I thought of my wife who I’d never see again. I don’t like recalling that experience,” he added.
Fortunately, they survived the horrifying experience after the pilot managed to maneuver free.
Dr. Guillen couldn’t contain his emotions as he thought of the five men trapped in Titan, which is still missing.
“My heart goes out to the people who are lost. I’m sick to my stomach to think [of them] down there,” he expressed.
He also said that the fact that the communications stopped in less than two hours suggests that they did not reach the sea bed.
“If it was a communications failure then you would know for sure that the pilot of that sub would have headed straight up to the surface. The fact he hasn’t really concerns me,” he added.
