Pee-Wee Herman star Paul Reubens’ cause of death is revealed one month after his sudden passing at the age of 70.
The iconic actor and entertainer died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, on July 30, 2023.
It was now confirmed by The Blast that the comedian’s death certificate lists acute myeloid leukemia – a cancer of the blood and bone – as his primary cause of death.
The publication further revealed that Reubens died of “acute hypoxic respiratory failure” as a result of his underlying conditions.
In addition to his blood and bone cancer, the actor is said to have also battled metastatic lung cancer.
Following Reubens’ death, his estate praised the actor for “bravely” and “privately” fighting his medical issues over the years.
Meanwhile, the 70-year-old’s posthumous message to his fans circulated the internet. In his candid message, the comedian apologized to his fans for keeping his condition a secret.
“Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years,” he said.
“I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”
The news of Reubens’s passing was met with hundreds of tributes from the likes of Natasha Lyonn, Kathy Griffin, and Cher.
“Love you so much, Paul. One in all time. Thank you for my career & your forever friendship all these years & for teaching us what a true original is. #PaulReubens #PeeWeeHerman,” Lyonn penned.
“Goodbye Paul Goodnight sweet prince May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest,” Cher posted as she shared a quote from Hamlet.
Griffin added: “This is a still shot from one of them. You get the idea. I did not know he was ill. The last time we spoke, I invited him to one of my dinner salons and he expressed that he did not want to come because he was worried about Covid. He came to my house after my Trump photo scandal and spend time with me calming me down.
“He and I shared a love for old timey celebrities and movie stars. We could chat for hours. He is the reason I joined the Groundlings. He was a complicated and gentle man. Almost too brilliant for one person.”
