Police investigating the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann are set to receive hundreds of thousands of pounds to continue the probe and determine what happened to the missing girl.
The Met Police reportedly requested a significant sum, which the Home Office is likely to approve, according to The Sun.
Maddie vanished while on a vacation with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, in Praia da Luz, Portugal in 2007.
Since 2011, a total of £13 million ( $15 million) was spent on attempts to find her.
A source close to the investigation said that the McCanns would be ‘delighted’ with the update.
“This is excellent news. Maddie’s parents Kate and Gerry will be delighted. It gives fresh hope,” the source said.
Madeleine’s siblings, Amelie and Sean McCann, were also in the room with their sister when she disappeared.
The twins, who were only two at that time, recently turned 18.
According to reports, their parents were at a nearby restaurant only 55 meters away. But when Kate checked the children at around 10 pm, Maddie was no longer in the room but the twins were still sleeping in their cots.
Former Metropolitan Police detective Peter Bleksley said to the paper: “As long as there are unanswered questions I can see why there is a case.
“But, in this time of squeezed budgets, I can also see why eyebrows would be raised.
“I understand the frustrations of missing children who do not have the luxury of such ongoing funding.”
A spokesperson for Home Office confirmed that it had received an application for more funding but did not reveal the amount.
