Pope Francis was buried with a heartwarming obituary describing the 266th pontiff as the simplest and most loved shepherd of all time.
The pontiff passed away on Easter Monday and was buried today in a funeral service attended by global leaders, including President Trump, Prince William, and Sir Keir Starmer.
Nearly 500,000 people were seen in a gathering for the open-air service, with some even going as far as to camp out in the streets on Friday night after traveling from around the globe.
Francis was lying in state in a simple wooden coffin lined with zinc at St. Peter’s Basilica since Wednesday morning, for nearly three days in public view. This was right before the coffin was sealed yesterday for the funeral today.
The obituary placed inside the coffin described how Francis was the 266th Pope and he would remain in the heart of the Church as well as all of humanity.
It closed by stating how Francis left everyone a wonderful testimony of humanity, the life of a saint, and universal fatherhood. Unlike other popes in the past, his was just a single coffin, whereas others had three different caskets. World leaders gathered to pay their final respects.
