An 81-year-old nun from France was given the chance to break protocol and weep in front of his casket, breaking Vatican protocol.
The nun was reportedly seen paying her final respects and bidding farewell.
Sister Genevieve Jeanningros was seen at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, where Francis’s body was laid in state this week as thousands of mourners gathered, waiting for hours to say goodbye.
Since the first day of his death, Francis was seen lying in state. She entered the area that’s usually only reserved for cardinals, priests, and bishops, all of whom are male.
She wished to pay respects to the pope as per the news agency. During that time, the general public was not permitted to enter.
As seen in the footage shared through social media, the nun approached a rope surrounding Francis’ coffin with assistance from an official.
She is seen in the viral picture standing a few feet from the casket. She continued to cry and place her hands over her face, seeming so moved emotionally.
She cried, and nobody stopped her as they knew she needed her moment to grieve.
