Ukraine has issued a major warning about Chernobyl being just 48 hours away from leaking radiation after its power supply was recently cut off.
Ukraine has urged Russia to stop for a moment and think about the major consequences in store for the world as Europe’s largest nuclear power plant could begin to leak out radiation in two days.
“We have called on Russia to observe an urgent ceasefire. This is serious and it needs to be dealt with so we can allow for the respective repairs to be made”- mentioned a Ukrainian government spokesperson.
The news comes as the nation’s nuclear company had previously issued an earlier warning regarding the matter, where they boldly outlined how Chernobyl could be leaking out radiation if there was a major electricity outage at the power plant’s site.
Energoatom stated how the loss of power makes it practically impossible for the spent sources of nuclear fuel to cool down.
Russia’s armed forces captured the huge plant and then cut out its power supply during the early days of the Russian invasion. And for that reason, it has not been able to make any repairs at the power plant, since then.
Other reports spoke about how the French government was in the midst of making contact with the IAEA which is the International Atomic Energy Agency. For this reason, it was requesting Russia to co-operate in this extremely dangerous situation.
“The reserve diesel generators only have a capacity of 48 hours to power the Chernobyl NPP’- mentioned Ukraine’s Foreign Minister during a recent interview while discussing the alarming situation.
The minister also shed light upon how after that 48-hour long period, all of the plant’s cooling systems in the storage department for the spent nuclear fuel would come to a halt and that is what makes the radiation leak unavoidable, he concluded.
