Tragic reports have confirmed the death of the son of Prince Robert of Luxembourg, who is Prince Frederik.

The royal passed away at the age of 22, leaving family members devastated.

He was said to be the cousin of Henri, who is the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. Sources shared how he passed away after a long battle with the rare genetic condition, POLG mitochondrial disease.

The news was mourned in a lengthy and heartbreaking post shared to the POLG foundation, which was a website that his son founded.

He dedicated it to the finding of effective treatments and a possible cure for POLG mitochondrial disease.

The rare genetic condition robs the body’s cells of energy and in turn gives rise to a series of multiple organ dysfunction and failure.

Progression of this condition can result in multiple organ failure as the brain and liver as well as the intestines, muscles, and swallowing functions fail.

Prince Frederik lived in Switzerland and was born with this rare disease. His official diagnosis was not until the age of 14 when his symptoms started to become acute with time.
