The third installment of The Princess Diaries is officially in the works.
18 years after the debut of The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Disney has begun working to revive the franchise.
According to the reports, Aadrita Mukerji, a screenwriter best known for writing Supergirl, Scorpion, and Reacher, is writing the script for the third movie.
Meanwhile, it was confirmed that the movie is being produced by Debra Martin Chase, the producer of the franchise’s first two installments.
Sources with knowledge of the project also confirmed that the movie will not be a reboot but a continuation of the popular story.
As of this writing, the first two movies’ lead star, Anne Hathaway, has not yet signed a deal that would see her return as Mia Thermopolis.
“I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it. If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen,” the actress told Entertainment Tonight back in October.
Should Hathaway make an epic return in the third movie, however, it is unlikely she will be reunited with Julie Andrews on screen since the 87-year-old previously admitted her time had already passed.
“I think it would be too late to do it now. There was talk of a sequel many, many years ago. But I don’t think it ever came to pass,” Andrews told THR earlier this year.
“[For] especially me, it’s too far down the line now to go back to it. It’s a lovely thought, but I don’t think it would probably be possible.”
