Russian President Vladimir Putin has spoken out after the announcement of Queen Elizabeth’s death.
Reaching out to King Charles III, Putin extended his condolences amid the brutal war against Ukraine that has set relations between Britain and Russia.
“The most important events in the recent history of the United Kingdom are inextricably linked with the name of Her Majesty,” he wrote.
“For many decades, Elizabeth II rightfully enjoyed the love and respect of her subjects, as well as authority on the world stage,” Putin went on.
“I wish you courage and perseverance in the face of this heavy, irreparable loss.
“I ask you to convey the words of sincere sympathy and support to the members of the royal family and all the people of Great Britain.”
It was in 2003 when the Queen and Putin met during a state visit to the UK. The Russian leader reportedly kept the Queen waiting for 14 minutes for their meeting.
Russians have also been leaving flowers outside the British embassy in Moscow in remembrance of the Queen.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also took to Twitter to offer his condolences.
“It is with deep sadness that we learned of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” he wrote.
“On behalf of the UA people, we extend sincere condolences to the @RoyalFamily, the entire United Kingdom and the Commonwealth over this irreparable loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.”
This is a rare moment two warring leaders are united.
Ukraine is currently hailing its successes as Putin faces another embarrassing defeat. If his troops pull back from Kherson and leave their attack in Donbas, it will be difficult to play off the assault as a success.
