Hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets to demand an end to the war Russian President Vladimir Putin has waged on Ukraine.
On Sunday morning, demonstrators gathered in front of Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate for an anti-war rally. The protest was peaceful, including families with their children.
Protesters waved Ukrainian flags to show their support while others brought placards with slogans such as ‘Putin, go to therapy and leave Ukraine and the world in peace,’ and ‘Hands off Ukraine.’
In Madrid, protesters gathered holding Ukraine flags and banners accusing Putin of acting like Hitler. People in South Korea’s Seoul also staged a demonstration outside the embassy of Russia.
Women took to the streets of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius carrying placards that branded Putin ‘Europe’s biggest aggressor,’ and Ukrainians in northern Iraq gathered in front of the United Nation’s office in Erbil for an anti-war protest.
Pope Francis also denounced the ‘diabolical and perverse logic’ of launching a war in Ukraine. “Those who make war forget humanity,” he said, adding that the warfare “relies on the diabolical and perverse logic of weapons, which is the farthest thing from God’s will.”
In Vilnius, demonstrators gathered after the Lithuanian government announced that it would close their airspace to Russian planes.
Other European countries, including Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Italy, Romania, Latvia, Luxembourg, and Estonia have also announced similar closures.
Russia also made an announcement that it is closing its airspace to planes from Estonia, Lithuania, Slovenia, and Latvia.
On Saturday, the Kremlin’s state aviation agency Rosaviatsiya also reported closing the Russian airspace for planes from the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Poland, and Romania.
