Billionaire Rupert Murdoch and Ann Lesley Smith called off their engagement just two weeks after they announced it.
The 92-year-old revealed his plans to marry the 66-year-old former dental hygienist back in March after branding their romance as a “gift from God.”
The bliss, however, didn’t last long and the pair broke off their engagement after reaching a “mutual decision.”
As one insider revealed, Smith’s struggles with publicity and attention could have been one of the major causes of the breakup.
“She just could not cope with being in the public eye. She is very private. They sat down and talked on Monday and agreed it was better for them to part,” a source said.
“He accepts that he will always be in the public eye and there is nothing he can or would do to change that.”
Another source also suggested that the business magnate and media mogul remains very fond of Smith and holds no grudge against the former dental hygienist.
“He admires her, respects her and thinks she is an amazing woman. He loves the fact she is so calm and so strong… and she shares his religious convictions,” the insider said.
The news comes just over two weeks after Murdoch proposed to Smith with an Asscher-cut diamond solitaire following six months of dating.
“I was very nervous. I dreaded falling in love – but I knew this would be my last. It better be. I’m happy,” Smith told the New York Post at the time.
“For us both it’s a gift from God. We met last September. I’m a widow 14 years. Like Rupert, my husband was a businessman. Worked for local papers, developed radio and TV stations and helped promote Univision.
“So I speak Rupert’s language. We share the same beliefs. In perspective, it’s not my first rodeo. Getting near 70 means being in the last half. I waited for the right time. Friends are happy for me.”
