According to the Russian government, the Peresvet system is a laser-based weapon that can blind satellites in the range of 930 miles and burn drones within the distance of three miles.

“It is already being mass-supplied to the (missile) troops, and it can blind all satellite reconnaissance systems of a likely enemy in orbits of up to 1,500 km, disabling them during flight due to the use of laser radiation,” Yury Borisov, the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia and head of military development, said.

“But that, let’s say, is of today, or even in some ways of yesterday: our physicists have now created, and practically mass-produced, laser systems which are more powerful by an order of magnitude that can inflict thermal destruction on various apparatus.”

Borisov went on to suggest that the new-generation lasers could be used to target a variety of systems the US uses to keep an eye on Russia’s intercontinental ballistic missiles.

“Today, so called weapons systems based on new physical principles are on the way,” Borisov added.

“This is primarily a laser weapon, an electromagnetic wideband weapon that will replace (conventional weapons) in the next decade – this is not some sort of exotic idea; it is the reality.”

The news comes shortly after Russia successfully tested its biggest and deadliest intercontinental ballistic RS-28 Sarmat, also known as Satan 2.

The 116-foot-long and 220-ton heavy ballistic missile has a range of 22,000 miles and can reach any target on the planet. Furthermore, the missile can be equipped with up to 15 nuclear warheads.
