Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of war crimes after Vladimir Putin’s forces launched vacuum bomb attacks during their invasion.
Zelenskyy said in a message to Russia that there would “definitely be an international tribunal” for what he called a “violation of all conventions,” adding that “no one in the world will forgive you for killing peaceful Ukrainian people.”
According to reports, Putin launched an indiscriminate bombing campaign on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.
Rockets and bombs rained down on the city, which is home to around 1.5 million people, in an attempt to break its resistance.
The attacks left at least 11 dead, including three children, with homes and a school left in ruins.
Speaking to MailOnline, a military source said that videos of the attack showed “cluster” munitions, which are illegal under international law, had been used.
“The BM-21 Grad is a multiple launch rocket system used for “area denial”, dropping cluster bombs on a concentrated area,” the source said.
“It’s mainly used on enemy troops before an offensive,” the expert continued. “Used against civilians, it’s not only a war crime, but has only one purpose – to spread terror and alarm among the civilian population.”
Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S. claimed on Monday that Russia used a vacuum bomb on their country.
Speaking after briefing members of the US congress, Oksana Markarova said: “They used the vacuum bomb today, which is actually prohibited by the Geneva convention. The devastation that Russia is trying to inflict on Ukraine is large.”
Also known as thermobaric weapons, vacuum bombs can vaporize bodies and crush internal organs. They are among the most powerful non-nuclear weapons ever made.
