Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, has been diagnosed with cancer, sources confirmed.
The 64-year-old royal was reportedly diagnosed with malignant melanoma – the most dangerous type of skin cancer – and had a growth removed from her body.
This comes just months after the mother-of-two underwent an operation in response to her breast cancer diagnosis.
Sources close to the ex-wife of Prince Andrew have since the shocking news spoken out and revealed that the duchess “remains in good spirits” despite the grave situation she’s found herself in.
Ferguson is now set to undergo additional tests to see if the skin cancer was fully eliminated with the removal of the affected mole before it could spread to other parts of the body.
“Following her diagnosis with an early form of breast cancer this summer, Sarah, Duchess of York has now been diagnosed with malignant melanoma,” her spokesperson confirmed.
“Her dermatologist asked that several moles were removed and analyzed at the same time as the Duchess was undergoing reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy, and one of these has been identified as cancerous.”
The representative went on to say that Sarah is now undergoing more tests to confirm that the cancer was detected early on and eliminated in time.
“Clearly, another diagnosis so soon after treatment for breast cancer has been distressing but the Duchess remains in good spirits,” the statement continued.
“The Duchess wants to thank the entire medical team which has supported her, particularly her dermatologist whose vigilance ensured the illness was detected when it was.
She believes her experience underlines the importance of checking the size, shape, color and texture and emergence of new moles that can be a sign of melanoma.
