The Sopranos and Goodfellas star Suzanne Shepherd has passed away peacefully at the age of 89.
The actress, acting teacher, and director died “peacefully in her home” in New York City on Friday, People confirmed.
The news of her passing was first reported to The US Sun by the woman’s granddaughter Isabelle.
In a statement obtained by the publication, the woman’s rep described Shepherd as a “director, legendary acting teacher and private coach” whose memorial service will be announced at the beginning of 2024.
Adored in the world of acting and entertainment, Suzanne was arguably best known for playing Carmella Soprano’s mother in the HBO series The Sopranos and for portraying Karen’s mother in Goodfellas.
Her TV appearance also included roles in the likes of Requiem for a Dream, Law and Order, Blue Bloods, and most recently 2023’s The Performance.
“She was note perfect in both Goodfellas and the Sopranos,” one fan wrote as tributes to the late icon began pouring in.
“Excellent actress who made Goodfellas and The Sopranos so special. Thank you, Suzanne Shepherd. RIP,” another expressed.
A third said: “Most will remember her as The Sopranos star but she was so much more. One of the best acting coaches I’ve ever met.”
Paying a tribute to Suzanne was also her former Sopranos co-star Ray Abruzzo who shared:
“Sad to hear of the passing of Suzanne Shepherd. A force of nature. Actress, teacher. Played Carmella’s mother on Sopranos and Karen’s mother in Goodfellas.”
Suzanne is survived by daughter Kate Shepherd, son-in-law Miles McManus, and granddaughter Isabelle Shepherd. Our thoughts are with the family during this challenging time.
