The renowned South Korean actor from Squid Game, O Yeong-su has bagged his first Golden Globe award at the age of 77.
He won the Best Supporting Actor in Television award for being Player 001 in the ground-breaking South Korean Netflix series Squid Game.
The 77-year-old actor who hails from South Korea has never won a Golden Globe in the past and this makes it a historic moment for not only him but his country too as he received the top prize for portraying Oh II-nam in the nail-biting show.
This makes him the first Korean actor to bag such a prestigious title on one of the world’s most popular award platforms, beating out the likes of Billy Crudup from the Morning Show, Mark Duplass from the Morning Show, Kieran Culkin from Succession, and Brett Goldstein from Ted Lasso.
The victory for the star was reportedly announced recently via a private ceremony that was held on Monday in Los Angeles. This is because this year’s live broadcast has been canceled after suffering major backlash over issues relating to a great lack of diversity in the nominations at hand.
For those who may not be aware, the Golden Globes is usually regarded to be a good indicator signaling who will take home the gold from the Academy Awards that will take place later on this year.
The actor reportedly started his acting career on the stage, where he appeared in numerous theater productions, right before switching into the world of film and television.
Ever since the show’s release in September of last year, the South Korean show became one of the most-watched series on Netflix in more than 94 different countries. And that includes nearly 142 million households had tuned in to get a glimpse of the chilling and addictive South Korean drama series.
