Starbucks has come under fire after launching a drink that allegedly made people visit the restroom more than they would like.
Oleato coffee, an alternative to the traditional cappuccino and espresso, has been rolled out in about six hundred Starbucks locations across Los Angeles and Seattle after the drink was inspired by the creator’s travels in Italy.
According to the reports, the new drink features a controversial mix of coffee and olive oil, two well-known ingredients with laxative effects.
While the drink is worshipped by some, others complained about getting an upset stomach and multiple trips to the comfort room after trying the new mixture.
The complaints went viral after an alleged Starbucks barista spoke out on Reddit and claimed their team didn’t find the new drink pleasant.
“Have you tried them? I’m wondering how many people are going to have happen to them what happened to our team” the barista wrote.
“Half the team tried it yesterday and a few ended up… Needing to use the restroom, if ya know what I mean.. I’m honestly scared to try it because I already have stomach/bowel problems.”
The question sparked a heated debate with dozens of critics taking a jab at the coffee chain and the new drink.
“Caffeine is a stimulant for your bowels and oil a relaxant. So yeah wonderful idea by Starbucks,” one response read.
“I’ve tried them , and tbh after drinking them honestly they just felt sick to my stomach lowkey. Like I had no appetite at all after that and that was the only thing I’ve had in the whole day,” another said.
A third complained: “The oleato at Starbucks is a legit laxative.”
A fourth admitted: “That oleato drink from Starbucks making my stomach speak.”
Some satisfied customers, however, fought back at these claims with one of them saying: “I tried all 3 and loved all of them. Had no problems whatsoever.”
As Starbucks founder and interim CEO Howard Schultz explained, the inspiration for the new drinks came from his past trips to Italy.
“During my first trip to Milan in 1983, I was captivated by the sense of community, connection, and passion for coffee I found in the city’s espresso bars,” he said.
“It was that trip that inspired me to bring the ritual of handcrafted espresso to Starbucks and to America.”
Schultz continued: “Oleato represents the next revolution in coffee that brings together an alchemy of nature’s finest ingredients – Starbucks arabica coffee beans and Partanna cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil.
“Today I feel just as inspired as I did 40 years ago. Oleato has opened our eyes to fresh new possibilities and a transformational way to enjoy our daily coffee.”
