Stephanie Lynn Nicks, better known as Stevie Nicks, has paid an emotional tribute to “best friend” Christine McVie after her sudden passing.
On Wednesday, the family of the Fleetwood Mac vocalist and keyboardist announced that the musician died after a short illness at the age of 79.
Since the tragic news, countless tributes to the musician who stayed with the British-American rock band for 28 years began pouring in.
Among the most touching messages honoring the late Fleetwood Mac band member and solo artist was that of Stevie Nicks, a singer-songwriter and producer well-known for her work with the band and her friendship with McVie.
“A few hours ago I was told that my best friend in the whole world since the first day of 1975, had passed away. I didn’t even know she was ill… until late Saturday night,” Stevie expressed in a handwritten note.
“I wanted to get to London but we were told to wait. So, since Saturday, one song has been swirling around in my head, over and over and over. I thought I might possibly get to sing it to her, and so, I’m singing it to her now.
“I always knew I would need these words one day (written by the Ladies Haim). It’s all I can do now…”
Nicks finished her tribute with the lyrics of the HAIM song Hallelujah as follows:
“I had a best friend
But she has come to pass
One I wish I could see now
You always remind me
that memories will last
These arms reach out
You were there to protect me
like a shield
Long hair running with me through the field….
Everywhere, You’ve been with me all along
Why me? How’d I get this hallelujah
Why me? How’d I get this hallelujah –
Why me? How’d I get this hallelujah”
The heartbreaking note comes shortly after McVie’s family announced the musician’s passing and officially paid her their respects.
“She passed away peacefully at hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30th following a short illness. She was in the company of her family,” they said in a statement.
“We kindly ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this extremely painful time and we would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being.”
