Tributes for Tina Turner have begun pouring in after the singer’s death at the age of 83.
The Best hitmaker died at her home in Switzerland on Wednesday after a long battle with a series of illnesses, her representative confirmed.
Icons in the music industry have since taken to social media to pay the musician their tributes and remember her as the wonderful friend, inspirational singer, and good human being that she was.
Leading the tributes was Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones who appeared on stage alongside Turner on several occasions.
“I’m so saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner. She was truly and enormously talented performer and singer,” he wrote as he shared a photo showing him and Tina performing a duet.
“She was inspiring, warm, funny and generous. She helped me so much when I was young and I will never forget her.”
Meanwhile, actress Angela Bassett, who portrayed Tina Turner in the 1993 biopic What’s Love Got To Do With It, spoke to Deadline to share her respects for the woman who managed to overcome an abusive husband and rise to fame after standing back up on her own legs.
“How do we say farewell to a woman who owned her pain and trauma and used it as a means to help change the world? Through her courage in telling her story, her commitment to stay the course in her life, no matter the sacrifice, and her determination to carve out a space in rock and roll for herself and for others who look like her, Tina Turner showed others who lived in fear what a beautiful future filled with love, compassion, and freedom should look like,” the Grammy nominee said.point 401 | 1
Recalling Tina’s final words to her, the actress added: “Her final words to me were ‘You never mimicked me. Instead, you reached deep into your soul, found your inner Tina, and showed her to the world.’ I shall hold these words close to my heart for the rest of my days.”
Paying a tribute to the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll was also Oprah Winfrey who long idolized the singer and later had her appear on her talk show multiple times.
“I started out as a fan of Tina Turner, then a full-on groupie, following her from show to show around the country, and then, eventually, we became real friends. She is our forever goddess of rock ‘n’ roll who contained a magnitude of inner strength that grew throughout her life. She was a role model not only for me but for the world. She encouraged a part of me I didn’t know existed,” Oprah shared.
“Once she claimed her freedom from years of domestic abuse, her life became a clarion call for triumph. I’m grateful for her courage, for showing us what victory looks like wearing Manolo’s and a leather miniskirt.”
Taking a bow before the music legend were also Madonna and Mariah Carey who both shared praise for Turner and the work she’s done throughout the decades.
“Thank you Tina Turner!! You paved the way for so Many Women! God Bless you!!” Madonna said.
“The words legendary, iconic, diva, and superstar are often overused and yet Tina Turner embodies them all and so many more — an incredible performer, musician and trailblazer. To me, she will always be a survivor and an inspiration to women everywhere. Her music will continue to inspire generations to come,” Carey added.
