This is a heartbreaking moment a Ukrainian reporter broke down in tears live on air after she recognized her family home in the photos of an apartment block destroyed by Russian bombs.
In the viral video, journalist Olga Malchevska can be seen discussing the situation in Ukraine with BBC World presenter Karin Giannone.
“It would seem that the fighting is very close now to the center of Kyiv,” Karin said.
Olga then replied: “It looks like that from the pictures I’m getting, but basically – I’ve just got a message from my mum.”
She looked down at her phone and said: “Finally, I couldn’t reach her. She’s been taking shelter, she’s hiding in the basement. Luckily she wasn’t in our building.”
Photos then showed emergency services rushing to help as an apartment block was destroyed by a bomb.
As the video showed the ruins, Karin said: “And you’re talking about that actual building?”
To which Olga replied: “This actual building is my home.”
“Olga, I don’t want you to be forced to talk about something that is so sudden and traumatic. This is unimaginable,” Karin said.
“I’m trying to see where my actual flat is because I was living on the sixth floor and basically it’s a 10-story building, there is a 16-story building linked to that,” Olga said.
She can be heard letting out a sigh and appeared to cry.
“I just can’t think in my head that what I’m seeing is somewhere where I used to live,” Olga said.
Karin took to Twitter and shared the video, writing: “The moment my @bbcukrainian colleague @Yollika sees pictures of her family home, partially destroyed overnight in #Kyiv.
“We did not know until that moment it was her actual building that had been hit. Thankfully Olga’s family is safe.”
