Nearly 30,000 residents in Alaska’s biggest city are getting ready for a massive volcanic eruption.
Scientists have sounded the alarm about how the odds of it erupting in weeks have increased more now than before.
Mount Spurr is a massive 11,000-foot tall volcano that sits just 81 miles from the biggest city in the state and it’s all set to blow this year for the first time in nearly three decades.
City officials in Anchorage mentioned how they’re now raising the emergency planning level to level 2 so that means that it would ramp up communication with the public about this threat and public safety agencies would prepare to launch into eruption response protocols.
The experts are now working with sources from the National Weather Service as well as the city to find out what are the anticipated impacts to the city.
It’s also worth pondering upon if the ash plume coming towards the city would be hazardous for states or not. The emissions are said to be the biggest development during the period of unrest for this volcano which has been experiencing this since the start of 2024. When it began to shudder with small earthquakes, the first clue was the new magma rising towards the volcano’s vents.
