Whoopi Goldberg has rushed to the 2024 Golden Globes host’s defense after the actor/comedian was slammed for his “terrible” jokes.
Jo Koy performance at the star-studded event on Sunday raised plenty of eyebrows with critics branding the stand-up comedian as unfunny, boring, and even “the worst Golden Globes host ever.”
Amid the backlash Koy suffered after poking fun at the likes of Taylor Swift and Robert de Niro, The View host Whoopi Goldberg shared her support for the actor while insisting she loves him because he’s funny.
“These hosting gigs are brutal. If you don’t know the room, if you’ve not been in these rooms before and you’re thrust out there, it’s hit or miss,” the 68-year-old said.
She added: “I love Jo Koy, he makes me crazy because he’s funny. I don’t know whether it was the room, I don’t know whether it was the jokes, I didn’t get to see it. But I do know, that he is as good as it gets when it comes to stand-ups and it is not an easy gig.”
Further cementing her stance on the matter, the comedian, author, and TV personality suggested there were also plenty of poor reviews for hosting on her end.
“If you read any of the reviews of some of the gigs I’ve had where they wished me into the cornfields … it’s not an easy gig,” she explained.
Jo Koy’s fall from hosting grace came as early into the show as his opening monologue despite his multiple attempts to save face.
After trying to bring some laughter into the room with Barbie and Oppenheimer jokes, Koy went off script and defended himself by saying some of his jokes were written by other people.
“Yo, I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue?” he asked the audience.
“Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me right? Slow down. I wrote some of these and they’re the ones that you’re laughing at.”
