50-year-old Beatriz Flamini is an extreme sports enthusiast who made a 230-foot-deep cave her home for five hundred days.

According to the reports, Flamini stayed underground while maintaining zero contact with the outside world for the entire time of the challenge which would drive most people crazy.

The extreme challenge was part of an experiment in which the woman’s biological stats were closely monitored with the aim of learning more about the human mind and the capabilities of our bodies.

After 500 days of isolation and darkness, Flamini emerged from the cave in Los Gauchos, Spain, where she was greeted by her loved ones and her supporters.

“I’ve been silent for a year and a half, not talking to anyone but myself,” the woman said as she was pressed by reporters for answers about her stay in the darkness.

“I lose my balance, that’s why I’m being held. If you allow me to take a shower – I haven’t touched water for a year and a half – I’ll see you in a little while. Is that okay with you?”

In footage shared by Timecave, the woman also opened up about the effects that her situation had on her mind and her perception of time.

“Caves are quite secure places, but very hostile to the human being and the brain because you don’t see the light of day, you don’t know how time is passing, you don’t have neurological stimulation,” she said.

“It’s not that the time passes more quickly or more slowly, simply that it doesn’t pass, because it’s always four in the morning.”

During her experiment, Flamini was closely monitored by a team of specialists including medical professionals, speleologists, psychologists, and researchers whose goal was to observe her every move while monitoring her mental and physical health.

In the process, she also appeared to break the Guinness World Record for the “longest time survived trapped underground” which was previously held by 33 Chilean and Bolivian miners who spent 69 days underground.

It is not immediately clear, however, if the record will fit in this category since Flamini’s stay in the cave was voluntary.
