A 70-year-old woman gave birth to twins via cesarean section after fertility treatments.
Safina Namukwaya from Uganda welcomed a baby girl and a baby boy after a lengthy IVF treatment and has now become one of the oldest women to give birth.
In an interview with TODAY, the excited mother said: “I feel great. Some might argue that 70 years is old, but God decided that I get to have twins at 70. There is no one that can put a limit on God’s authority and power.”
Namukwaya, who also has a 3-year-old daughter, has been alternating between pumping and breastfeeding.
“Some households will be helping me with washing and the babies because of my advanced age,” she said.
Her twins were born at 31 weeks gestation and each weighed over 3lbs, said Dr. Edward Tamale Sali.
Speaking to TODAY, the fertility specialist said: “We implanted four embryos, and then of course, she conceived the twins.”
Posting to Facebook after Namukwaya gave birth, the hospital said: “We at Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre would like to thank NTV Uganda for helping capture this historic event.
“At 70 years, Safina Namukwaya delivers twins today: Women’s Hospital International and Fertility Centre Sets African Record! Celebrating our 20th anniversary, we’ve achieved the extraordinary – delivering twins to Africa’s oldest mother aged 70!
“This historic event, a baby boy and girl, not only marks our two decades of leadership in IVF, but also sets us apart as the premier fertility center in Africa.”
The post concluded: “Namukwaya delivered her babies today on Wednesday 29th November at 12:04PM. Mother and babies are all well.”
