A woman from New Jersey has reportedly been sentenced to three years in State Prison for taking part in a horrific GoFundMe scam.
Sources from local media outlets have gone on to speak about the monster scam that she began with her then-boyfriend and partner in crime.
The alleged couple lied about a man being homeless in Philadelphia and hence were able to conduct a very sophisticated scam to help out that so-called veteran that never existed. Hundreds came forward to add their share but little were they aware of this couple’s intentions regarding the whole matter.
The 32-year-old fraudster suspect chose to skip the court hearing where her sentencing was mentioned, She was named Katelyn McClure from Burlington County. The reason had to do with how she was already serving her sentence at a prison located in Connecticut as per reports from the Prosecutor’s Office.
Now, her state sentence would be running side by side, and that means she would be barred on a permanent basis from carrying on with her regular job as a regular employee in the state.
She and her boyfriend Mark recently pleaded guilty to wire fraud of the most severe kind. They came up with a heartwarming but bogus story that had the officials in a state of complete shock over the matter. According to them, the old veteran just made use of his final $20 to help this woman fill up her gas tank after she reportedly got stranded on the interstate in Philadelphia. On that note, the duo began a new GoFundMe campaign that was titled, ‘Paying it Forward’.
Donors paid a lot and really sent in some of the most generous contributions, thinking they would all go to him. But little were they aware that it wouldn’t be the case. Instead, the couple had evil intentions to keep all the funds coming in, leaving the authorities and the public in shock when the veil was removed from their actions.
14,000 donors sent out $400,000 and the couple even took part in interviews to help gain more publicity on the case. But thankfully, the plot came into the end after the authorities conducted a check and found out it was fake.
