Jose Paulino Gomes of Corrego do Café, Brazil, was born on August 4, 1895, according to the local media that used the man’s marriage certificate to confirm his age.

“According to the record, he got married at 22 years old. It is presumed that he was indeed born before 1900. Men rarely got married at 17,” legal advisor Willyan Jose Rodrigues de Souza said.

If true, this information would make Jose the oldest living human on the planet prior to his recent passing. The official Guinness World Record is currently held by Maria Branyas Morera of Spain who is 115 years old.

“Here in the countryside, people are usually registered when they are older. There are several cases with incorrect documentation. But his documentation showed he was younger than he actually was,” the man’s granddaughter, Eliane Ferreira, explained.

“There is a lady nearby who is 98 years old. She says she knew him when he was just a boy. That’s when we became curious to confirm his age and looked up the registry office to find out what was correct.

“He definitely was over 100 years old, at least 110. Now we need to know how it will be recorded on the death certificate.”

Throughout his long life, Jose welcomed seven children, 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. His family also explained that the man was widowed for a large portion of his life and that he worked as an animal tamer.

“He was very simple, very humble. His uniqueness was that he didn’t like anything industrialized, only things from the countryside, natural,” Eliane added.

“He raised chickens, pigs… his food was all from here, had to be grown or raised here. And he always liked to have a little drink.”
