A 19-year-old NHS worker from Newcastle applied the wrong shade of fake tan and left it for an hour that turned her skin dark brown.
Kelsey Chambers, who works as a call handler for the NHS, uses fake tan every three days. To cheer herself up amid lockdown, she bought a £13 bottle of St Moriz Darker Than Dark lotion.
She applied the fake tan for an hour but was left terrified when it turned her skin color a deep shade of brown.
She tried to scrub her face with bleach but was left with burns to her skin.
Kelsey said: “I bought it off Pretty Little Thing. I always do my tan every three days or something. I hate being pale and it makes your outfits look better. I left it on for an hour and that’s what it turned out like.”
“When I realized it was that dark I laughed for hours and was shocked. I was not leaving the house looking like that. I just had to keep washing it until it looked natural.”
Kelsey shared a picture of herself on Facebook that instantly went viral online and people were left horrified after seeing how her skin turned dark brown after using the fake tan.
She captioned the picture: ‘Use darker than dark they said’.
The picture received more than 1k likes and nearly 4k shares. Some were left in stitches while some were seriously worried about Kelsey’s skin.
Despite the bad experience, Kelsey hasn’t stopped using fake tan. She says she has just learned not to use much after the horrible incident.
She said: “I still use the fake tan now but don’t use so much and it goes on much better.”
