Chris Watts’ former girlfriend Nichole Kessinger has applied to have her name changed.
Kessinger, 32, applied for a name change earlier this month two years after she confessed that she was having a relationship with Watts, who was arrested for the murder of his wife and their children.
Watts and Kessinger met at work and fell in love, with the father-of-two lying to his family so he could spend romantic weekends with her.
When his pregnant wife, Shannan, confronted him about the affair, Watts killed her and their unborn son at their Colorado home.
He also drove their two children, Celeste and Bella, to a remote oil field and wrapped them with a blanket before putting their small bodies into an oil tank.
Kessinger’s application to have her name changed comes after Netflix’s documentary American Murder: The Family Next Door examines the stories that led to the killings and mentions her name.
According to Radar Online, she believed it would be difficult for her to go out ‘for years’ because of the slander and threats against her.
“She has received several threats, public shaming and could be considered one of the ‘most hated women’ in America,” a source said. “She plans to start fresh with a new name, new town and ultimately a new identity.”
Kessinger said to investigators that Watts admitted he had two children but claimed to have been separated from his wife. She also claimed that he did not mention she was pregnant with their third child.
The night before the triple homicide, Kessinger spent more than 40 minutes Googling ‘the anal sex guide’ and ‘how to prepare for anal sex.’
After the killings, she Googled how much money Amber Frey made in her book and checked ‘did people hate Amber Frey.’ Frey was Scott Peterson’s mistress when he killed his wife Laci Peterson and their unborn child.
