Nike has revealed its first modest swim collection that comes with tunics, a hijab, and leggings!
Prices start from only $42 for the Nike Swim Hijab while the professional set costs around $650.
The new collection comes after the incredible success of the Nike Pro Hijab worn by Ibtihaj Muhammad, US champion fencer when she received the bronze medal in Rio.
Nike hopes the new swim collection will help encourage more women to take up swimming.
“As designers continued learning from athletes across diverse communities, they saw a striking gap in apparel for water sports — specifically, a lack of options for female athletes who don’t want to choose between modesty and movement with comfort and confidence,” a spokesperson said.
“Existing products were lacking in either coverage or functionality, athletes shared, leaving them feeling weighted down by baggy garments, battling drag instead of striving toward personal bests or worrying about whether their hijabs and coverings would remain in place.”
The Nike Victory Swim collection is breathable, quick-drying and lightweight. The Nike Victory Swim Tunic Top and the Nike Victory Full-Coverage Swimsuit feature a built-in sports bra and perforated cups.
The Swim Hijab comes with an integrated mesh pocket to keep hair in place while swimming underwater.
Emirati figure skater Zahra Lai is among the new collection’s fans. After trying the products, she said: “I feel super light and confident in this. It doesn’t weigh you down, and it helped me swim better. It’s so different than any of the swimsuits I’ve ever seen, and I know I can wear this confidently.”
One internet user commented: “You don’t have to be of any particular background to want to dress or be modest. Not everyone thinks it’s cool to walk around half naked!!A nun might feel comfortable in this, as well as someone who feels insecure about their belly /thighs. Whoever wants to cover, let them cover!”
Another wrote: “What the world needs is more modesty and covering up.”
Someone else said: “Im not sure why so many people are livid at this – nobody bats an eyelid when surfers and some professional swimmers use full on body suits. I must say I find the thong bikinis that completely expose the buttocks and most of the pelvic area to be a lot more off putting.”
